One student from Waiakea High School won the coveted “Talk Story” award at 2023 ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Student Video Competition, the largest and oldest video competition in Hawaii, now referred to as the “Keiki Oscars”
The video, titled “When Water Pulls Back, Act Fast,” was produced by Waiakea High student Kaylee Brower.
The winners were selected from over 600 videos that entered the competition, and were open to public, private, and charter schools statewide.
The winning Youth Xchange student videos were selected based on subject impact and technical production.
The judging panels included local news media, film-making professionals and, in the case of sponsored categories, subject experts. The event was sponsored by First Hawaiian Bank.
‘Olelo Youth Xchange was launched in 2003 to give island keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats and about subjects that are meaningful to them.
Since its inception, ‘Olelo Youth Xchange has awarded nearly 650 video cameras to media-education programs in schools throughout Hawaii.
